A Taste Of Camarillo Wine, Brew & Food Festival has a great lineup of California wineries again this year. They range from very small to large wineries and are all interesting in different ways. Alma Sol Winery
Alma Sol is a family-owned and operated, micro-boutique winery, sourcing premium fruit from top vineyard sites in California, with a special focus on the Paso Robles appellation. John and Lisa Shaw started Alma Sol (which means “soul” and “sun”) in 2011. In addition to Rhone varietals and blends they make Cabernet Sauvignon with Paso Robles fruit.
Artiste Los Olivos
Artiste is a winery and tasting studio experience that transports you to an 1880s working art studio, modeled after Hotel Baudy, the tiny inn in Giverny, France, where the Impressionism movement kicked into high gear. Combining a reverence for tradition and a philosophy of winemaking as an artistic expression, Artiste wines are labeled with gorgeous works of impressionist art. Each of the wine blends are named after the title of the painting that graces its bottle. Some of the finest Contemporary Impressionist artists across the country are commissioned and they license a new painting for each new wine. Taking inspiration from the colors, imagery and story behind each wine label, Artiste’s winemaker, Bion Rice, blends and weaves different wines together to create Artiste’s Impressionist Cuvées. Bion Rice, John Poulos, Matt Hahn and Tom O’Higgins opened Artiste as a concept that takes a different approach to winemaking in America, and to be deeply involved in the lives of artists as well. Ascension Cellars is a premium, boutique winery specializing in barrel-select, handcrafted Rhône and Bordeaux-style wines from the central coast of California since 2010. Eric Allen, winemaker, collaborates with Sterling Kragten, winemaker of Cass Vineyards, on blending Grenache inspired wines sourced from Cass Vineyard, Frankel Vineyard, and Miracles Ranch.
Back Patio Cellars
A Hobby… Turned into a Passion… Turned into a Dream… Turned into Reality. Owners Frank & Jen Hules named their winery Back Patio Cellars after spending nights on their back patio drinking wine with their friends and family. After trying different varietals, different styles, and different wine regions they ended up with something special. In 2012 they started their first vintage of commercial wine at a winery that provided them with custom crush services. After making Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah, they expanded their wines with Zinfandel, Syrah, Chardonnay, Cab Franc, Tempranillo and Pinot Noir.
Barr Estate Winery
The Barr family (Geoff, Tealy, Greg and Mathilde), along with winemaker Signe Zoller, began making wine in Paso Robles with their first vintage in 2007. They produce Albariño, Malbec Rosé, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and blends like Jubilado (Malbec, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah).
Bedford Winery, located in historic “downtown” Los Alamos, specializes in barrel fermented Chardonnays, signature Syrahs and lesser-known varietals such as Mourvèdre, Cabernet Franc, or a dry Gewürztraminer.
The second generation of winemaking Cakebreads is now running a winery that has become one of the most successful and respected wineries in America, renowned for its world-class vineyards, wines, and hospitality. Cakebread Cellars has vineyard properties located throughout Napa Valley and a location in the Anderson Valley. The winery ranches surrounding the production facility in Rutherford are where it all began. The first 22 acre parcel was purchased in 1972. Over the years, the family has continued to acquire additional vineyard parcels throughout Napa Valley and the North Coast. Calcareous Vineyard was established by father and daughter Lloyd Messer and Dana Brown in 2000 on Paso Robles’ west side. Their vineyards are planted atop solid calcareous rock at up to 1,800 feet. They produce world–class blends and varietal wines with their Calcareous Estate wines and their Twisted Paso wines.
Winemaker Mike and Meadowlark member Chris Brown, owners of Cantara Cellars in Camarillo, produce a broad selection of award-winning red and white wines. They specialize in producing wines made from grapes grown in the Lodi Appellation in Northern California. Each wine expresses the distinctive flavors found in Lodi grapes. Their wines include:

Cass Vineyard & Winery
Steve Cass and Ted Plemons established Cass Vineyard & Winery in 2000 with winemaker Lood Kotze from South Africa. Their vineyards are in the hills between Paso Robles and Creston on the Central Coast where they produce Rhone style wines. Sterling Kragten is the current winemaker at Cass Vineyards.
Cholame Vineyard is a relatively new winery located in San Miguel at the southern tip of Monterey County. Founded by David DuBois in 2006 , their first harvest was in 2010. Winemaker Andres Ibarra produces varietals of Chardonnay, Grenache Blanc, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Tempranillo and Zinfandel.
Coda Wines produces boutique wines grown, crafted and bottled in Santa Ynez Valley. Winemaker/Owner Spencer Daley sources fruit grown in vineyards that he manages and his first release was the 2013 vintage. Originally from Camarillo, Spencer started making wine when he was 16 and he will be pouring these new releases at A Taste Of Camarillo:

Daniel Gehrs Wines
Daniel Gehrs Wines is the personal expression of winemaker Daniel Gehrs, whose vision of wine is simply this: “The holy grail of my winemaking is the taste of the grape on the day of harvest.” Dan hastens to add: “The first duty of a wine is to be interesting. Life is too short for boring wines”. Closely following this dictum is a second, simply put “A wine must taste good. Not just for ‘tasting’ but for ‘drinking’!” Dan firmly believes in wine as food. That rules out blatantly ‘over the top’ or ‘trophy’ wine styles that the press loves to fawn over.
Wines include different vintages of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Gewurtztraminer, Merlot, Methuselah, Ozymandias, Petit Verdot, Petite Sirah, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Syrah, and Zinfandel.
Derby Wine Estates
Ray and Pam Derby purchased their first vineyard property in 1998, now known as Derbyshire Vineyard, then acquired the historic Laura’s Vineyard (in east Paso), and then the Westside property, now called the Derby Vineyard. In 2008 they launched Derby Wine Estates.
Winemaker Tiffinee Vierra, a graduate of Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo,started as a lab technician at Edna Valley Vineyard, moved on to a hospitality position at Tablas Creek Vineyard, and then became an Assistant Winemaker at Four Vines Winery. She joined Derby Wine Estates in 2005. Tiffinee’s husband, Steve, is an accomplished Soil Scientist and has been the Vineyard Manager at Derby Wine Estates since 2001. Steve has worked in Australia, Chile and New Zealand and has completed 15 harvests within two hemispheres. The winery is in a building that was constructed by the Paso Robles Almond Growers Association as a warehouse and processing plant in 1922. Their estate wines include: Pinot Gris,’FIFTEEN 10′(31% Marsanne, 26% Roussanne, 22% Grenache Blanc, 11% Viognier, 10% Picpoul Blanc), Grenache Blanc, Rosé, Sparkling Brut Rosé, Petite Sirah, Pinot Noir, Project Espana Red (four Spanish varietals), Implico (46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 13% Petit Verdot, 9% Malbec, and 5% Cabernet Franc), The Maneater (58% Petite Sirah, 42% Zinfandel), Mourvèdre, ‘FIFTEEN 10’ Red (39% Syrah, 28% Grenache, 19% Counoise, 14% Mourvèdre), Pinot Noir, and De Facto Port.
Four Brix Winery
Four Brix Winery is a craft winery in Ventura that specializes in wine blends based on grape growing regions in Italy, France, Spain and California. Owners Jim, LP, Tracy, Barry, Karen and Gary produce around 2,500 cases of Smitten (Viognier), Zeductive (Zinfandel and Petite Sirah), Temptress (Tempranillo, Mourvèdre and Grenache), Rhondezvous (Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah) and Scosso (Sangiovese, Cabernet and Merlot) plus other blends.
The Fratelli Perata story begins with Giuseppe (Joe) Antonio Perata in 1930. Years later, in 1977 Joe and his brother, Gino, purchased a 40 acre parcel of land one mile west of Highway 101 and one-half mile north of Highway 46; it looked like their ancestral home near Genoa. The soil and microclimate were perfect for premium grapes. Planting began in 1980 with Zinfandel as the focus. Their current wine list includes Bambino Grande, Barbera, Bel’ Bruzzo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Sauvignon Riserva, Cab Franc, Charbono, Mafalda, Merlot, Petite Sirah, Petite Verdot, Sangiovese, Tre Sorelle, and Zinfandel.
Frolicking Frog Cellars
Frolicking Frog Cellars, with a winery in Atascadero and a tasting room in Paso Robles, was founded in 2003. Winemaker Stu Goldman, produces 450 cases of Viognier, Rosé of Cabernet, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel and other red blends.
Golden Star Vineyards
Lee and Helen Williams are the Owners/Winemakers of Golden Star Vineyards in the Antelope Valley of the California High Desert, AVA, in Littlerock. They grow grapes in this new AVA and also source them from the Paso Robles and Monterey AVA. Their wines include Chardonnay, Merlot, Syrah, Zinfandel and Purple Haze (Zin blend). Estate grapes of Tempranillo, Malbec and Muscat of Alexandria will be available soon.
Kilter Wines is a family-run, small wine company that brings small lot, premium wines to you from spectacular growing regions throughout California. They are a business that brings family values and value priced wines to anyone who wants to get in Kilter. The most common definition for Kilter is “of proper order, good condition or proper form”. The origin of Kilter is from various English and Scottish dialects with the original definition meaning “a state of good health, spirits or good order.” This definition is in sync with their vision to produce a product that is associated with good health and most importantly good spirits. They currently have a Cabernet Sauvignon – Sonoma Valley and two vintages of Pinot Noir – Russian River Valley.
Joe and Melinda Laraneta are the owners of Laraneta Vineyards in Templeton. Winemaker Signe Zoller helps them produce a variety of mainly blends that include Cabernet Sauvignon, Cameo (Vernaccia/Bianchetta Trevigiano), Cardinal Gold (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese), Misto (Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon), No. 5 (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese), Sa Va (Merlot), Sangiovese, and Velvet (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot).
Larner Vineyard and Winery
Larner Vineyard and Winery is a small, family-run vineyard located at the heart of the best grape-growing region in Santa Barbara: Ballard Canyon in the Santa Ynez Valley. Founded by Stevan and Christine Larner in 1997, the property is managed today by a second generation of Larners. Michael and his wife Christina Larner live onsite and Monica Larner returns regularly from her home in Italy. Michael has a Master’s Degree in Viticulture & Enology, UC Davis, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Geology from the University of Colorado at Boulder. The 134-acre ranch is planted to 35 acres of vine, including Rhône varieties Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre and Viognier. As a small tribute to Italy, they also have one block of Malvasia Bianca. Their vineyards are in the recently establish Ballard Canyon AVA and production is limited to 900 cases per year. You can teste some of their wines in the VIP Lark Saloon this year. Loire Valley USA Inc.
Loire Valley USA Inc. is the first company specializing in the importation of AOC/Appellation wines from France’s Loire Valley. They have selected fine wines from small French artisanal vintners, each representing an AOC/ Appellation of the Loire Valley. Many of the 22 wineries that they represent haven’t had presence in the US wine market before. Loire Valley wines offer great diversity and a very appealing price-to-quality ratio.
Robert & Barbara Wagner, owners of Maganvino Cellars in Oxnard, produced their first commercial vintage of wines in 2008. Robert is the winemaker and he sources many of their grapes from the Lodi AVA. They produce about 2800 cases of white, red, blends and dessert wines annually. Their wines include Pinot Gris, Beautiful (white blend), Butterfly, Chardonnay, Grenache Rosé, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Petite Sirah, Sangiovese, Syrah, Trifection (Grenache, Sangiovese and Petite Sirah), Magnatude (Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah), Merlot, Zinfandel, Old Vine Zinfandel, Tre Gemmé (Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre), and Tuscan Romance (Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot). Guilty Pleasures, a desert wine, is a fortified version of their Petite Sirah. Magnavino Cellars was the official ATOC festival winery last year.
Navarro Vineyards in the Anderson Valley of Mendocino has been growing grapes, making wine and producing non-alcoholic grape juice since 1974. Their current releases include dry white wines that include a Roussanne-Marsanne blend, a Pinot Blanc, and a Riesling. Two red wines from the 2012 vintage and a 2014 rosé are also available.
Opolo Vineyards – Official 2016 Festival Winery
Opolo owners/winemakers Rick Quinn and Dave Nichols, Camarillo neighbors and long-time supporters of our festival, produce wines from their 280 acres of vineyards in Paso Robles. Their Westside vineyards in the Adelaide Hills produce Pinot Noir and Sangiovese and their Eastside vineyards produce Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Opolo’s first commercial crush began in 1999 when they produced Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Zinfandel, and Muscat Canelli.
Oso Libre Winery
Oso Libre is a traditional San Luis Obispo cattle ranch raising grass fed Black Angus and free range chickens. The vineyards are tended by Olde English Babydoll sheep grazing the land. The wind and sun supply over 100% of the energy needs for their winery. Their 10KW progressive Wind Energy Conversion Facility (WECF) conserves and creates energy from 77 solar panels and their carbon footprint is 0%! Owners Chris and Linda Behr produce very limited quantities of premium wine. The wines currently available include:

Panaro Brothers Winery
The Panaro Brothers have been making wine in the old-fashioned Italian tradition in the industrial sector of Ventura since 2009. Winemaker Vito Panaro selects their grapes from vineyards in Paso Robles, Templeton, Los Alamos, Creston, Santa Ynez, San Miguel, southern Monterey County, and Antelope Valley. They production includes Barbera, Syllabic, Cabernet Sauvignon, Dolcetto, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Syrah, Chardonnay, Moscato, Grenache Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, and White Zinfandel.
Pear Valley Estate Wine
Since 1999 Tom and Kathleen Maas have owned Pear Valley Vineyard in Paso Robles. They have grown it in size over the years and achieved a Sustainability in Practice (SIP) Vineyard Certification. Jared Lee is Pear Valley’s winemaker and produces 10,000 cases annually of estate Bordeaux varietals and blends.
Penman Springs Vineyard
Beth and Carl McCasland, owners of Penman Springs Vineyard artisan winery in Paso Robles, along with winemaker Larry Roberts, craft a lineup of varietal offerings of Muscat Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Petite Sirah, along with Petit Verdot for use in their “Meritage” blend. Penman Springs only produces about 2,000 cases a year, most of which is sold at the winery and through their wine club.
Plan B Wine Cellars
Marlow and Janis Barger are the owners/winemakers at Plan B Wine Cellars in Ventura. They produce wine from the Central Coast that includes Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Rose of Grenache, Zinfandel, classic Rhone Blend GMS and GSM.
Andrew and Laurel Quady are the founders, C.E.O. and C.F.O. respectively, of Quady Winery. Their path into the wine world began with an exodus from southern California to pursue their dream: a rural way of life making wine. Starting with Zinfandel port in 1975 Andy’s pioneering use of rare muscat varietals, and his fascination with aromatic herbs, tends to take the market by surprise.
Ranchita Canyon Vineyard
Bill and Teresa Hinrichs have developed their Ranchita Canyon property into a premium wine grape vineyard, with a new boutique winery focusing on small lot Estate Wines. Ranchita Canyon Vineyard overlooks the beautiful Pleasant Valley, and the first vines were planted in about 1970. The Hinrichs family owns and operates the vineyard and winery with the goal to achieve rich, concentrated, bold fruit. They are known for producing premium wine grapes on their south facing rolling hills at 1000′ to 1400′ elevation, with primarily chalky, calcareous soil. Their extensive wine list includes:

The Rasmussen family has been growing fruit for the Paso Robles wine industry for 20 years. Located on the East Side of the Paso Robles AVA, Rasmussen Vineyards is a boutique winery specializing in Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. Rideau Vineyard was founded in 1997 by New Orleans native, Iris Rideau. Early on in the winery’s inception, Iris Rideau decided to dedicate her estate vineyard entirely to Rhône varietals. She felt that Rhône wines were not only ideally suited to the Santa Ynez Valley AVA, but also instinctively felt that they were best suited to the Creole cuisine of her childhood.
As the vines matured, and the first estate wines were produced, Iris soon began hosting a series of Creole-inspired dinners, with each dish paired with a Rhône varietal. The dinners were wildly successful, and soon became full-fledged winery events, attracting food and wine lovers from around the country. Today, Iris continues to host frequent events held at the winery grounds, pairing the food of her homeland with Rhône varietals.
Over the course of the last fifteen years, Rideau Vineyard has grown in prestige and acclaim yet has remained dedicated to small production and no distribution.
Rio Seco Vineyard & Winery
Rio Seco Winery owners/winemakers Tom and Carol Hinkle have been growing grapes and making wine in Eastside Paso Robles since 1997. Over the years Tom has also been a scout for Major League Baseball teams. The thirty-one acres of vineyards at Rio Seco produce traditional Paso Robles Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as Syrah, Cab Franc, Roussanne, Viogner and Merlot.

Sculpterra Winery & Sculpture Garden is based on the concept of offering a location to view and admire art and taste wine in Paso Robles. Sextant Wines owners Nancy and Craig Stoller, along with winemaker Steven Martell, produce Zinfandel and Petite Sirah blends at their state-of-the-art custom crush and winemaking facility on the west side of Highway 46 in Paso Robles. They also make Albarino, Chardonnay, Grenache Blanc, Grenache Rose, Pinot Noir, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, GSM, and other blends.
Sta. Rita Hills Winegrowers Alliance
The Sta. Rita Hills Winegrowers Alliance has 48 members and was formed in 1997 to unify growers and winemakers in the Western Santa Ynez Valley for the purpose of developing their own American Viticulture Area and to promote this unique wine growing region. The Sta. Rita Hills American Viticulture Appellation is on California’s Central Coast in Santa Barbara County. The Pacific Ocean’s marine layer and afternoon ocean breezes traverse the coastal valley corridors between the Purisima Hills and the Santa Rosa Hills, creating the perfect environment for growing Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and other cool climate wine grape varieties.
Nebil “Bilo” Zarif founded Summerland Winery in 2002 to produce fine wines from the Central Coast. Winemaker Etienne Terlinden produces wines from 14+ different varietals from 9 vineyards, with Central Coast annual production of 12,000 cases and Single Vineyard annual production of 3,000 cases. Known for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Summerland’s Burgundian varietals have been highly rated by The Wine Advocate’s Robert Parker.
Sunland Vintage Winery
Michael and Debby Giovinazzo started their “Giovinazzo” label in 2010 and added their “SVI” label recently. Their Giovinazzo wines include Nebbiolo, Montepulciano and Dolcetto, Tre Ragazzi (Nebbiolo, Barbera, and Sangiovese), Delicate Princes and The Goddess. SVI wines from Sunland Vintage Winery are premium non-italian varietals. Their wines are produced in Lodi and their tasting room is in Thousand Oaks.

Summerwood Winery produces small lots of ultra-premium wines available exclusively from their Westside Paso Robles estate. Low yields, respect for the land, and hands-on winemaking tradition are key as SummerWood wines are expressions of their environment. Wines holding varietal designation are intensely defined examples of an individual grape’s character, while flagship blends provide a stage for their winemaker’s orchestration of the vintage’s greatest performance. Constantly evolving, and impossible to duplicate, each wine is unique. The California Wine Club
California is home to thousands of small family wineries handcrafting extraordinary wine in quantities too limited to be found in local stores. So Bruce and Pam Boring founded the California Wine Club in 1990 to help these artisan wineries introduce their hidden gems to the world. The Sanger Family of Wines
Bill & Jan Sanger’s Sanger Family of Wines is located in Los Olivos and comprised of the Consilience, Marianello and Tre Anelli brands.
In addition to their red and white blends these labels produce the following wines:
Viognier, Chardonnay, Roussanne, Grenache, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Zinfandel Port.

Tobin James Cellars
Tobin (Toby) James built Tobin James Cellars on Highway 46 east of Paso Robles in 1993. Lance and Claire Silver became business partners in 1996. Tobin and Lance are the winemakers and make blends plus the following wines.
Whites include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Syrah Rosé, and Riesling.
Reds include Sangiovese, Merlot, Zinfandel, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Primitivo, Tempranillo, Barbera, and Malbec.
Dessert Wines include Moscato, Late Harvest Zinfandel, and Port.
Toucan Wines is a family-owned winery and vineyard in the Arroyo Grande Valley that focuses on estate grown, premium Zinfandel and Petite Sirah wines. Owners/winermakers Doug Timewell and Terrie Leivers produce full-bodied and richly flavored wines that include Old Vine Carignane and several different blends of Zinfandel, Carignane and Estate Petite Sirah. Their limited production totals less than 300 cases per year. Current releases include:

Valen Wines has been making small batch wines for the last ten years as a hobby carefully directed by its winemaker and sommelier. Mark and Julie Wasserman, owners/winemakers of Vinemark Cellars, source their grapes from vineyards in Santa Ynez, Paso Robles, Monterey and Napa Valley. Mark harvests, crushes and ferments his wines in Paso Robles and he operates the business from Thousand Oaks. They produce Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Primitivo, Mezzanotte (Primitivo, Petite Sirah) and a ruby port style Touriga Dessert Wine.
Vino Vargas winemaker Pedro Vargas and Sommelier Victoria Vargas make wine in San Miguel near Paso Robles. They produce cleverly labeled wines such as El Taxi Cabernet Sauvignon, Matador Merlot, Rio Ruso Pinot Noir, Toro Tinto Tempranillo, Olé Chardonnay, Del Sol Roussanne, Costa Rosa GSM Rosé.
Vista Del Rey Vineyards
Vista Del Rey Vineyards is a small, hands-on, “mom & pop” winery northwest of Paso Robles operated by Dave King and Carol DeHart-King. A small, dry-farmed vineyard purchased in 1994 produces Zinfandel and a newer block planted in 1996-97 is the source for Barbera. In addition to their wines, they also offer a selection of gourmet food items and wine accessories.
