13 Breweries and Counting at A Taste of Camarillo, Wine, Brew & Food Festival 2016

Beer lovers will be happy to know that every year A Taste Of Camarillo attracts regional and local craft breweries; it’s not just a Wine Festival! You may have seen some of these breweries at past festivals, some may be new to you, and some will be new to everyone. Learn more about the breweries, brewmasters, locations, and beer that you might sample at A Taste Of Camarillo this year by reading below and visiting their websites.

Anacapa Brewing Company
The Anacapa Brewing Company is Venturaʼs only restaurant and brewery, or “Brewpub.” They serve fresh, hand-crafted ales and lagers produced in a 12-tank stainless steel brewery by Head Brewer Jason Coudray, who joined the team in October 2010. General Manager Danny Saldana worked at the brewery since it opened in 2000 and officially became the owner in 2007. Raised in a family-owned restaurant with over 31 years of experience Danny’s goal is to continue providing Ventura with a great selection of handcrafted ales, a menu of delicious and original meals and a warm friendly meeting place. Samples of their beers are:

  • Benyhana Espresso Stout
  • Tis the Seasonator
  • Santa Rosa Red
  • Pierpont IPA

Coachella Valley Brewing
Coachella Valley Brewing Company is located in Thousand Palms and they connect both ends of the Coachella Valley through locally grown citrus, herbs, honey, and spices and expertly crafted beer. They use a state of the art 17 barrel high efficiency brew system which is one of only five in operation on the planet. The heart of the system is mash filtration technology. They do not use a mash tun/lauter tun combo and instead press the mash through a filter press which increases their mash efficiency to 95-98%. Coachella has a long list of brews:

Enegren Brewing Company
Chris Enegren, Matt Enegren and Joe Nascenzi started Enegren Brewing Company, a 3-BBL brewery in Moorpark, in 2011 with Valkyrie Altbier and Protector Imperial IPA. They expanded to additional seasonal brews and several barrel aged brews and in 2015 they opened a new, 15 barrel brewery near their first brewery.

Seasonal Brews: Daniel Irons Oatmeal Stout, Contradiction Black IPA, Golden Spur Saison, Shorts Day IPA, Captain’s Summer Session, Foliage Pale Ale

Fireman’s Brew
In December 2000, Rob and Ed sat in the Glendale Mountains above an extinguishing brushfire, dreaming of a fresh beer to quench their scorched dry mouths. From this point, these two LA-based firemen set out to brew the best Fireman’s Brew in the world. The result was Fireman’s Brew, the perfect choice to “Extinguish Your Thirst & Ignite the Party!” With every product sold, Fireman’s Brew donates a portion of its profits to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Their “Off Duty Drinks” include a Blonde Pilsner style lager, Brunette German Doublebock, and a Redhead Red Amber Ale.

Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co.
Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co. was founded by Jim and Jaime Dietenhofer in 2010. With a passion for craft beer, they set out to pay homage to the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley with handcrafted beer and hand-drawn artwork depicting the local landscape on their labels. Named after the mountain seen from their family home in Los Olivos, Figueroa Mountain Brewing Company opened in Buellton first. In the following five years the company has become one of the fastest growing craft breweries in America and now has a staff of over 200 which they affectionately call the #FigFam. Fig Mountain has six taprooms on the Central Coast in Arroyo Grande, Buellton, Los Olivos, Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, Westlake Village. Fig Moutain Core Beers include:

  • FMB “101” Kölsch
  • Hoppy Poppy IPA
  • Hurricane Deck DIPA
  • Lizard’s Mouth IIPA

Firestone Walker Brewing Co.
Firestone Walker Brewing Company was founded by Adam Firestone, son of Brooks Firestone, and brother-in-law David Walker, who studied brewing at UC Davis. They brewed their first beer in 1996 in a small facility rented from the Firestone Vineyard estate in Santa Barbara County. In 2002 they purchased the SLO Brewing Company in Paso Robles where they added 17 interior fermenters, four 500 bbl exterior fermenters, a KHS keg line, and a Krones bottling line. The company is only one of two brewers in the world that maintains a commercial-sized Burton Union system, a system of fermentation in oaken barrels. Firestone Walker’s ales are selectively fermented in the Firestone Union oak barrel brewing system. The Firestone Union incorporates 65-gallon, medium and heavy toast American oak barrels.

Five Threads Brewing Company
Five Threads Brewing Company was founded by Neil Shirley, Tim Kazules, Evelyn Pryor and Michael Pryor. At Five Threads they use the term “threads” to mean the blending or bringing together of “good things” to create “great things” such as the ingredients of their beer, the members of their team, or the members of their community coming together to share a pint! Their beers include:

  • Bliss – Double IPA
  • Pantry Porter – Robust Porter
  • RED – Red Rye
  • IPA Serenity – Belgian Golden Strong

Institution Ale Company
This family-owned micro-brewery is operated by Roger Smith (President), Ryan Smith (Brewmaster) and Shaun Smith (Sales Director). They are dedicated to crafting unfiltered American style ales. The brewery is based in Camarillo and has an on-site tasting room.
Their year-round beers are:

  • Restraint – An American Brown Ale
  • Institution – A West Coast style IPA
  • Sedation – A lower alcohol Red Ale

Lagunitas Brewing Company
The Lagunitas Brewing Company was founded in 1993 in Lagunitas, California, by Tony Magee. It moved to nearby Petaluma when their operations quickly outgrew their original location. The brewery is known for iconoclastic interpretations of traditional beer styles, and irreverent descriptive text and stories on its packaging. The company was the fifth top selling craft brewery in the US in 2014 and announced that Heineken International would acquire a 50% stake in 2015. They have since opened a brewery in Chicago and are building another one in Azusa. Some of their beers include:

  • IPA – Ruthlessly Delicious
  • A Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’ Ale – Way Smooth and Silky
  • Pils – Lager like you like it
  • Dogtown Pale – A 21st Century Pale
  • Aunt Sally – A Unique Dry-Hopped Sweet Tart Sour Mash Ale
  • DayTime – A Fractional IPA
  • Sucks – Brown Shugga’ Substitute Ale
  • Maximus – Kinda like their IPA on steroids
  • Censored – Malty, Roasty, and Deceptively Smooth
  • Hop Stoopid – A Double-Barrel Dose of Malt and Hops
  • Imperial Stout – Dark, Thick, and Scary
  • The DownLow – A dry and hoppy, stoooooopidly slammable copper ale!

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.
Sierra Nevada Brewing Company was started by homebrewers Ken Grossman and Paul Camusi in 1980 in Chico, California. They recently opened an Appalachian brewery on the east coast in Mills River, North Carolina. Annual production exceeds 800,000 barrels and the beer list includes lots of hoppy and other bold beers:
Year Round: Pale Ale, Torpedo Extra IPA, Hop Hunter IPA, Nooner Pilsner, Kellerweis, Porter, Stout, Old Chico Brand
Seasonal: Beer Camp Hoppy Lager, Summerfest, Oktoberfest, Celebration

Surf Brewery
Surf Brewery, located near Surfer’s Point in Ventura, was founded by home brewers and surfers that support the Surfrider Foundation. They are the only packaging microbrewery in Ventura County, distributing their own kegs and bottles. The brewery also has a fully stocked Homebrew Shop.

The Lab Brewing Co. @ The Twisted Oak Tavern
The Lab Brewing Company, opened in 2011, is located within The Twisted Oak Tavern in Agoura Hills, CA. The brewery provides fresh beer to pair with food from the Twisted Oak kitchen. Award winning brewmaster Roger Bott has been brewing beer for over 20 years. While he’s not a real doctor, Roger’s nickname of “Dr. Hops” comes from his Amgen scientific background, studying the fundamentals of brewing in college, and brewing in Holland and Belgium. Dr. Hops can usually be found in The LAB, brewing Belgian and west coast hoppy stylings. Roger also makes ginger beer for an unbeatable Moscow Mule. House Beers include Cold Fusion Java Porter (Coffee Porter), Honey I’m Home Blonde (Honey Blonde), Hop Solution (Double IPA), Seasonal Session (Light Seasonal Rotational Brew), and Take Her Home (Belgian style tripel). The LAB also serves other popular craft brews from both local and regional breweries.

Wolf Creek Restaurant & Brewing Company
Wolf Creek has been in the Santa Clarita Valley since 1997. They started in Santa Clarita and their new Tasting Room & Brewery is in Valencia. Wolf Creek Brewing Company began its life in founders Rob and Laina McFerren’s garage as bottles of different home brews filled it up. Since then Wolf Creek has become an award winning community meeting place known for its great brews, great food and great service in a comfortable atmosphere. In 2008, Rob and Laina formed WCRB with local businessman, Darren Utley, to grow the Wolf Creek concept in multi-unit restaurants. They brew about 26 ales and have these on tap:
